Hi folks! Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on personal carry guns for different seasons. Living in Idaho, with its diverse four-season climate, I adjust my choices based on the weather and clothing needs.
Key Factors in Choosing Carry Guns
Concealment:
- Summer: Smaller guns for lighter clothing and easier concealment.
- Winter: Larger guns since jackets and layers provide better coverage.
Effectiveness:
- In colder months, where heavy clothing layers are common, larger calibers like .45 ACP perform better than smaller calibers like 9mm or .38 Special.
Summer Carry Guns
- Sig Sauer P365 (9mm, 12 rounds)
- Sig Sauer P938 (9mm, 7 rounds) - Compact, lightweight, and ideal for pocket carry.
- Easily retrievable and deadly with proper ammunition.

Winter Carry Guns
1911 Variants (All .45 ACP):
- Dan Wesson CCO: Commander-length slide (4") with officer grip for better concealment.
- Colt CCO: Reliable and lightweight aluminum frame.
- Both models feature Crimson Trace laser grips for enhanced accuracy.
Para-Ordnance P12 (.45 ACP):
- Staggered magazine holds 12 rounds.
Glock Model 30 (.45 ACP):
- Compact and versatile with optional threaded barrel for suppressors.
Glock Model 21 (.45 ACP):
- Larger frame for shoulder holster carry.
Specialty Carry Options
J-Frame Revolvers:
- Lightweight Smith & Wesson models (e.g., titanium and scandium builds).
- Perfect for coat pockets with no exposed hammer, allowing for firing directly through clothing.
Key Considerations
Holsters:
- Black holsters are less noticeable if exposed briefly.
- Thumb snap designs allow for fast access.
Training:
- Carrying a gun is a serious responsibility. Proper training is essential for safety and confidence.
